Military-themed strategy experience

League of War: Mercenaries is a free-to-play action game from Jirolabs that puts you in control of a military detachment. This is a real-time strategy experience where your tactical decisions have noticeable impacts on an immersive battlefield. Its futuristic theme and full 3D graphics add to the excitement, not to mention the different gameplay scenarios included in the game.

The mix of tower defense, strategy, and base building make League of War: Mercenaries a thoroughly enjoyable game, despite its poor sound work. Some parts of it are similar to The Battle Cats, while other parts resemble Last Shelter: Survival.

Be the best military commander

The gameplay for League of War: Mercenaries can be divided into separate aspects. Its combat feels like Battle Cats: two military bases are pitted against each other. Your base generates money over time, which allows you to purchase military units that automatically move toward the enemy base. Aside from this battle scenario, you also have a main base where you upgrade your production abilities and unlock additional units and technologies.

Visuals-wise, the game features some smooth 3D graphics in all aspects. Its design is already an incentive for players looking for a well-designed game, much more when you start unlocking the larger and more advanced units. While the graphics easily go toe-to-toe with the best in the subgenre, the audio is a different story. There are virtually no voiceovers and the overall sound work is all over the place.

Aside from the technical aspects detailed above, the game doesn’t depart from its contemporaries. The game’s lack of a compelling storyline makes it difficult to last through the late-game stages. The base-building and the combat start to become repetitive, with the upgrades taking longer with each iteration. This also leads to another challenge, the game’s model of enticing players toward microtransactions.

Great visuals, but lacking in other aspects

In conclusion, League of War: Mercenaries offers engaging combat reminiscent of Battle Cats, with smooth 3D graphics enhancing gameplay. However, its lack of a compelling storyline and repetitive base-building and combat detract from its long-term appeal. While its design is visually appealing, the sparse audio elements leave much to be desired. Ultimately, despite its technical strengths, the game's reliance on microtransactions may deter some players seeking a more immersive experience.
